Lord Vishnu : Vishnu is regarded as a major god in Hinduism and Indian mythology. He is thought as the preserver of the universe, while two other major Hindu gods, Brahma and Shiva, are considered the creator and destroyer of the universe, respectively.

As the preserver of the cosmos, Vishnu upholds the universal laws. Unlike Shiva, who often seeks refuge in the forest to meditate, Vishnu constantly participates in worldly affairs. Ensuring that all is well.

When order prevails in the universe, Vishnu sleeps on the coils of Sesha, ruler of the Nagas. As Sesha floats along the cosmic ocean supporting Vishnu, the universe unfolds from Vishnu's dream. But when there is disorder in the universe, Vishnu either mounts his vehicle, Garuda, and battles with the forces of chaos, or he sends one of his Avatars (or incarnations) to save the world.

It is believed that Vishnu would have ten such Avatars, the most popular being Rama and Krishna. The full list of ten Avatars is as follows:

1. The fish Matsya

2. The turtle Kurma

3. The boar Varaha

4. The man-lion Narasimha

5. The dwarf Vamana

6. The warrior-priest Parashurama

7. The prince Rama

8. The cowherd Krishna

9. The sage Buddha-Mayamoha

10. The horseman Kalki

Vishnu uses both force and guile to ensure the stability of the universe. His consort Laxmi, goddess of wealth and power, offers him the wherewithal to maintain the integrity of the world.

Today, Vishnu is one of the most highly revered deities, but he has not always been so popular. In the earliest Hindu writings, the Vedas, he is mentioned infrequently, and is associated with the major Vedic god Indra. Through the later epics, notably the Ramayana and Mahabharata, he is glorified through the Avatars Rama and Krishna.

ravinder said...

Rama : In Hindu myth, Prince Rama is the seventh incarnation (or avatar) of Vishnu, and he is one of the most loved deities in India. Indian families tell their sons that they should grow up to be like Rama. Prince Rama is the hero of the Indian epic the Ramayana. In this story, he is the son of the King of Ayodhya, and heir to the throne. However, his stepmother wants him banished from the kingdom so that her natural son can become heir to the throne. Regretfully, the king asks that Rama leave the kingdom. Seeing his father's predicament, Rama gladly leaves the kingdom for the forest.

Rama goes to live in the forest with his brother and with his enchanting wife, Sita. While there, Rama drives off some Rakshas from the forest. Their demonic leader, Ravana, seeks revenge on Rama by abducting Sita.

Rama, his brother, and Hanuman, the Monkey King, set off to free Sita from the island of Lanka, where Ravana is holding her. Hanuman uses his powers to build a bridge using the bodies of his monkey army for Rama to cross, and flying in on Hanuman's shoulders, Rama shoots an arrow into Ravana. He has succeeded in killing the demon and liberating his wife.

ravinder said...

Hanuman the Monkey King : Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the Hindu god of Wind, and is looked upon by Hindus as the ultimate hero. He represents the figure of the ideal being, as he is humble yet brave. His physical prowess, mental discipline and spiritual purity have made him extremely popular all over India.

As a child, Hanuman mistook the rising sun for a fruit and tried to eat it, in the process disrupting the movements of the nine astrological bodies, the Grahas. When Indra, lord of the skies, hurled his thunderbolt to stop Hanuman, Vayu was so angry that he sucked away the air from the three worlds causing all creatures to choke. Vayu wouldn't release the wind until Indra promised to give Hanuman supernatural powers.

Hanuman is best known from the Indian epic the Ramayana. In this masterwork, Sita, the wife of Prince Rama, is abducted by the demon Ravana. Hanuman leads his army of monkeys and bears to build a bridge from India to the island of Lanka, where Sita was being held.

As Hanuman's armies attacked, Prince Rama rode in on Hanuman's shoulders and fired an arrow into Ravana, killing the demon and liberating Sita.

Krishna is one of the most popular deities throughout India. Krishna is considered the eighth avatar, or incarnation, of the god Vishnu. According to legend Krishna was not only divine, but heroic as well. Krishna is believed to have defeated numerous dragons and monsters, and eventually, as predicted, killed his half-uncle, the tyrannical king Kamsa.

In the epic poem the Mahabharata, Krishna plays a major role that serves as the starting point for a change in Hindu practice. In the poem, he serves as the charioteer for Arjuna, who is about to go into battle against many of his relatives.

As Arjuna sits dejected knowing that to be victorious he must slay his half-brothers, Krishna delivers his celebrated oration, the 'Bhagavad-Gita' (The Song of the Celestial One), on duty and life to the troubled hero Arjuna. This speech persuaded Arjuna that although he was torn by loyalty, it was right to fight against his kinsmen since they were unrighteous.

Krishna expounds a philosophy of right action being the ideal path of salvation, as opposed to relying on ritualistic sacrifices and idol worship as a means of salvation. He states that while yoga and devotion might lead to oneness with God, righteous conduct is better since it helps in both the spiritual and material worlds. The two former methods, Krishna notes, were only focused on the spiritual worlds.

In other works, Krishna is considered to be quite a prankster, who spends much of his time watching over cowherds and seducing milkmaids. It is common to see both aspects of Krishna in Hindu artwork, that of a soldier/philosopher, and that of a child or young man looking after cowherds

Lakshmi (also spelled Laxmi) is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, beauty, pleasure, and abundance - all the goods things in life. Lakshmi is the mother of Kama, the young god of love. She is the consort of Vishnu, and is his wife during each of his incarnations. She is adored by gods, demons and humans alike.

Usually Lakshmi is depicted sitting on a lotus, wearing a red sari, covered in jewels. In one of her four hands she holds a vase containing fortune and wealth. Often white elephants, the symbol of rain clouds, can be seen playing in the water near Lakshmi, often spraying her with water from their trunks.

Lakshmi has a few different forms. As Shreedevi, the goddess makes kings out of men, bestowing them with sovereignty, splendor and royal authority. In this form, she is Vishnu's shakti, the source of his divine power, which helps him to protect the universe. As Bhudevi, the earth-goddess, Lakshmi provides food, clothing and shelter to all creatures.

ravinder said...

Durga or Maha Durga : Durga is a malignant form of Devi, the Mother Goddess. (Devi's other common forms are Kali and Parvati.) According to myth, the gods could not defeat the demon Mahisha, who had taken on the form of a great buffalo. They begged Shiva for his assistance, and Shiva advised all the gods to release their shaktis (spiritual prowess) locked within their bodies.

The shaktis of the gods emerged in female form. These goddesses fused together in blinding light from which arose a magnificent goddess with many arms. She was as beautiful as she was deadly.

The gods called this goddess Durga, the invincible one, and they armed her with their weapons. Thus armed, Durga rode to the top of a mountain on a lion. In a bloody battle, she destroyed Mahisha and his army of demons.

ravinder said...

Parvati is one of the major aspects of Devi, the universal goddess. She is known as one of the benevolent forms (while Durga and Kali are the wrathful forms). She is appears as ShivaÕs consort, considered in this form to be a mountain goddess.
According to legend, Shiva had become despondent over the death of his wife, so he turned to the life of a hermit. He sat concentrating his energies until he turned into a pillar of fire. The gods became worried over this, and begged the mother goddess Shakti for help.

In response, the goddess took the form of Parvati, princess of the mountains, and sought to win Shiva's heart with the help of Kama, god of love. But when Kama shot his love-dart at Shiva, Shiva opened his third eye, let loose a fiery missile and reduced him to ashes.

Parvati then took on the life of a hermit as well, and mortified her body through austerities that won Shiva's admiration, and he accepted her as his consort. Inspired by Parvati's beauty, Shiva made music and began to dance.

Parvati also cajoled Shiva to reveal the secrets of the cosmos locked in his mind. It is believed many seers were enlightened when they overheard their conversation between the two lovers. Parvati is highly revered for her ability to transform the austere ascetic Shiva into an amorous householder.

Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and the mistress of the arts, and is the consort of Brahma. She rules the intellectual and creative realm, and is the patron saint of libraries and schools. Saraswati is not normally adorned in jewels, but instead opts for a white sari. Her vehicle is a swan, and she is often depicted holding a book in one hand and a flute in another.

Saraswati is well loved by Hindus because she was able to tame the wandering mind of Brahma. According to legend, at the dawn of creation, Brahma became enchanted by his first creation, Shatarupa, goddess of material existence. He was so entranced by her that he sprouted five heads so he could watch her at all times. He chased her wherever she went, but he could not possess this mercurial being.

To restrain Brahma's lust Shiva, the supreme ascetic, wrenched off one of Brahma's heads. Sobered by the experience, Brahma turned to Saraswati and learnt to rein in his bewitched mind. Saraswati's children, the Vedas, showed Brahma the way out of the labyrinth of sensuality. From that day, the four heads of Brahma began chanting the four Vedas.

Ganesha is the God of success and overcoming obstacles, but is also associated with wisdom, learning, prudence, and power. As the god of success, his names are chanted at the start of any important venture. As the remover of obstacles, he is invoked at the start of every journey, marriage, religious rite, house construction, the writing of a book or even a letter.
There are two myths about his birth and how he came to posses the head of an elephant. One myth relates that his mother, Parvati, had to go for her bath when her husband, Shiva, was not at home. As Shiva had gone on a meditation retreat and was not expected to return, Parvati ordered Ganesha to keep guard and not let anyone inside the room. But after a while Shiva arrived and when he tried to enter, the child refused to let him do so. This angered Shiva, who cut off the child's head.

In order to make up for his mistake, Shiva promised Parvati that if she places the head of any person or thing which crosses her path early the next day, the child would come back to life. The first person or thing that passed by them was the mighty elephant. Shiva cut off its head and placed it on the torso of the beheaded child.

Another version says that Parvati was blessed with a beautiful son, and all the Gods assembled to see and admire the son of Shiva and Parvati. They all gazed at the child except Shani, because he was under a curse, which caused any being he looked at to be burnt to ashes. Parvati insisted that Shani also look at and admired her son.

But no sooner had he done so than Ganesha's head was burnt to ashes. Parvati cursed Shani for having killed her son, but Brahma intervened, and comfortingly told her that if the first available head were planted on her son's shoulders, he would be alive again. So Vishnu set forth on Garuda and the first creature he found was an elephant sleeping beside a river. He cut off its head and this was fixed on Ganesha's body.

According to legends Ganesha is a great scribe and learned in religious lore and scriptures. Hence, Ganesha is often depicted with only one tusk, since it is believed that he broke off the other so that he could inscribe the Mahabharata, which was dictated by to him the seer Vyasa.

Indra was the supreme ruler of the gods in the early Hindu religious books, particularly the Rig Veda. Indra was the leader of the gods, the god of war, the god of thunder and storms, and the greatest warrior. He defended both gods and mankind against the forces of evil. His main celestial weapon is the Vajra, considered the lightening bolt (or a diamond).
In later times, Indra slowly lost much of his grandeur, and eventually he became regarded as a god of the weather, or the king of lesser gods.

Lord Shiva : Shiva is the third deity of the Hindu triad of great gods, the others being Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva is often referred to as the Destroyer, but it might be better to think of him as the God of Transformation, since he is often associated with creation that comes out of destruction.

But Shiva has different aspects that appear at different times. He is often depicted as the destroyer, and will appear as a naked ascetic accompanied by demons, encircled with serpents and necklaces of skulls. Sometimes Shiva wanders into crematoriums, smears his body with ash and dances in the light of the funeral pyres, reminding all about the transitory nature of material things.

Sometimes the creative force of Shiva is depicted, and in particular Shiva is represented by a phallus, known as the linga. Other times Shiva is seen as the god of meditation and asceticism. He will be depicted sitting cross-legged with his eyes half-closed.

Another common form is that of Shiva Nataraja. This is Shiva engaged in a cosmic dance. It is believed that the energy from this dance sustains the cosmos, and when Shiva is finished with this dance, this universe will end and a new one will begin.

Snakes are often associated with Shiva, since they are able to regenerate their skins by discarding their old ones. Likewise, in southern India, deer are associated with Shiva because their antlers re-grow after falling out. Shiva is also associated with the rainy season, as the monsoon rains transform the ground from dessert into vertile valley.

Shiva is often depicted carrying a trident, and the three tips of this weapon represent the creation, protection (or sustaining), and destruction of the universe. He might be carrying an ax, which is to symbolize the severing of ties to the material world

Maha Kali : Kali is the goddess of dissolution and destruction. She is known for destroying ignorance, and she helps those who strive for knowledge of God. Her name means "The Black One" and the city of Calcutta is named in her honor. Kali is fearsome in appearance. She has wild eyes, a protruding tongue, and she wields a bloody sword. Kali also holds the severed head of a demon, and she wears a belt of severed heads.

In Hindu mythology, the gods could not kill the demon Raktabija. Every drop of his blood that touched the ground transformed itself into another demon. Within a few minutes of attacking this asura with their weapons, the gods would find the entire battlefield covered with millions of demon clones.

In despair, the gods turned to Shiva. But Shiva was lost in meditation, so they turned to his consort Parvati. The goddess immediately set out to do battle with this dreaded demon in the form of Kali.

She rode into the battleground on her lion, and Raktabija experienced fear for the first time in his demonic heart. Kali ordered the gods to attack Raktabija. Kali then spread her tongue to cover the battlefield preventing even a single drop of Raktabija's blood from falling on the group. Thus preventing Raktabija from reproducing himself.

Drunk on Raktabija's blood, Kali ran across the cosmos killing anyone who dared cross her path. She adorned herself with the heads, limbs and entrails of her victims. To pacify her, Shiva threw himself under her feet. This stopped the goddess. She calmed down, embraced her husband, and shed her ferocious form.

Brahma: In Hindu mythology, Brahma is the senior member of the triad of great gods, which also includes Vishnu and Shiva. In later Hindu mythology, he became symbolized as the supreme eternal deity whose essence makes up the cosmos.
Brahma is considered the creator of the universe. Before the cosmos existed, Brahma was all alone, self contained and self-content. Eventually, he felt inadequate and longed for company. Brahma split himself and created the goddess Shatarupa. Her many forms captivated Brahma, and he desired to posses her.

But that was not to be. Like all material things, Shatarupa would turn into something else every time Brahma got to her. She turned into a cow, a mare, a goose and a doe. Brahma kept pursuing her, taking the form of the corresponding male - a bull, a horse, a gander, a buck. Thus all creatures of the cosmos, from the smallest insect to the largest mammal, came into being.
Brahma sprouted five heads, so that he could watch Shatarupa at all times. To restrain Brahma's lust, Shiva wrenched off one of Brahma's five heads. This helped Brahma come to his senses, and he took Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, as his consort. With her help, he regained control of his mind.

For creating the universe, Brahma became known as the lord of progeny. But he is not worshipped because he is responsible for distracting the mind away from the soul and towards the cravings of the flesh.

Devi, also known as Maha Devi or Uma Devi, is the Divine Mother of the Hindu world. Devi is the "Mother Goddess," meaning she is the mother of all. Her name means goddess, and she has many forms or incarnations. Her most familiar forms are ferocious, such as Durga and Kali, or benevolent, such as Parvati. In the form of Parvati, she is the consort (wife) of Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration.
As the mother of all life, Devi is gentle, and is the god of nature and life because she brings rain and protects against disease. As mother of death, she is terrible. Lakshmi, wife of Vishnu is an incarnation of Devi. She is the goddess of creative power and represents all women in the universe.

Ganga is the goddess of the river Ganges, India's most sacred body of water. Hindus believe that bathing in her holy waters will help wash one's sins away, and hence they conduct repeated ritualistic washings in the river to secure a place in heaven.
Her power to wash away sins and liberate is so strongly believed that the ashes of the dead are spread over her. Ganga is usually represented as a beautiful woman with a fish's tail in place of legs, and she rides on the Makara, a water monster.

One myth about the origin of Ganga is that the god Vishnu once heard Shiva play the flute. Vishnu was so entranced by the music that his feet began to melt. Brahma caught the liquefied portion of Vishnu in a pot and from it created Ganga. Hence Ganga is also known as Vishnu-padi (she-who-was-born-out-of-Vishnu's-feet).

Originally Ganga flowed only in the heavens, but then was ordered to go down to earth. Not wanting to, she threatened to flood the whole world. The gods were so afraid of her that they sought the help of Shiva.

Shiva broke the fall of Ganga by capturing her in his mighty locks of hair. Since then, Ganga resides on top of Shiva's head as his second wife, the first being Parvati.

THE RATIONALE OF SRI HANUMAN WORSHIP

There are people who feel a paradox in extolling and worshipping a monkey-faced figure, Sri Hanuman. What is the rationale of a subhuman is being depicted as the greatest devotee of Sri Rama!

Some of the intellectuals and historians, who had not explored deep into the profound symbology of highly evolved spiritual concepts of Hindu philosophy, project their superficial views that either this is part of a primitive animistic worship or a distorted view of some historical situations! Recently I read an article by an intellectual expressing his contempt for the Puranas because there are some Puranas even about animal-Gods. Evidently the westernized scholar is familiar only with the extra-terrestrial superman-God of the western religious concepts, who is partial and who needs the help of his human followers to execute his whimsical programmes, and not with the omnipresent Spiritual Power immanent in everything highlighted by the wisdom of India's ancient sages.

While the Upanishads contain deep and direct inquiries on the aspects of Supreme Truth, the epics like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas present the same knowledge in scintillating story forms. The Puraanic approach can be compared to that of the surrealistic style in painting. While presenting subtle spiritual ideas and values through stories and strange characters, they sometimes creatively 'disturb' us, nourish our faculties of imagination, help us break the patterns of routine thought and give us solace, reassurance and joy by pointing out the higher potentials of life. They are repositories of traditional sciences, high philosophical knowledge and devotional hymns potent with spiritual power. In their own way they are serving an educative and cultural purpose, and as is evident today, interest in them is increasing with the march of time because of their inherent value. They offer treasures for research.

The profundity of India's spiritual symbolism should be made clearer to the modern man. According to Hindu philosophy, the very Source of all phenomena is Brahman, the Supreme Reality, which is defined as Sat-Chid-Aananda (Existence-Intelligence-Bliss). Mind and matter are two aspects of Reality and are interlinked. While matter evolved into living beings and the evolution progressed, as the neo-Darwinists like Sir Julian Huxley presume, "the mental factor reached in higher animals a high level of intensity" ('Philosophy in a World at War' by Sir Julian Huxley). There has been a step by step progress to greater degrees of freedom as the mental factor gradually thus got intensified. Man in his evolutionary stage is characterized by a predominant presence of mind. Even the very word 'man' has a close link with the Sanskrit word 'manas' which means 'mind'. In Sanskrit man is termed 'manushya', the being having the mind.

In the evolutionary scheme man stands a step ahead of the monkey. Man is also known as 'nara' in Sanskrit and the monkey or ape, as 'vaa-nara', the words 'vaa' and 'nara' posing the question, 'is not monkey almost a man?' (This emphasis on the 'mind' and the terms nara and vaa-nara, etc., indicate the knowledge of the sages regarding the trend of evolution. It should be remembered that Indian philosophy has its basis an evolutionary concept of the universe, of man and his spiritual freedom).

Despite having the facilities of mind and therefore the freedom of choice and action, man is in a critical stage of evolution where prevails a strong conflict between his subhuman tendencies and the evolutionary destiny that has to take him to higher stages of existence. The instinctive fears of the animal kingdom pester him while he is only dimly aware of the possibilities of freedom his further evolution would lead to. This situation keeps him in a state of constant agitation and fear. All the deadly weapons he has created and all the terrible wars he wages are the outward expression of these animal instincts in him. This conflict has to be overcome through an effort for the further intensification of consciousness. This is the goal of all true spiritual striving.

Sri Hanuman shows the way

His subhuman body symbolizes this general human situation and he is depicted both as a great devotee and profound scholar. He possesses immense physical and spiritual strength, which he has acquired by getting mastery over the animal instincts through devotion and knowledge. Animals usually can only react to the environment. In some higher animals only there are some traces of the ability to act with discrimination. This is a great potential possessed by man. Get mastery over the animal instincts and the mental flux through devotion and knowledge, consolidate the faculty of discrimination and evolve to the freedom of divine consciousness -- this in the great message of Sri Hanuman.

This destiny of man to evolve from animal to the Divine is so graphically revealed by Sri Hanuman in the depths of his own heart by showing us the Divine within! The sage-author of the Ramayana reveals the essence of Vedantic philosophy when Sri Rama asks a very significant question to Sri Hanuman: "Who are you?" Sri Hanuman replies, "As body, O Lord, I am Your humble servant, as an individual, I am a part of You, and as the Supreme, I am Yourself." The great message is that every one has the potential and right to realize one's Timeless Reality even in a time-bound plane of existence.

The ancient sages were well aware of the relationship between a form and the ideas represented by the form. It is no wonder that those who worship Sri Hanuman acquire the strength and courage to face the situations of life and receive guidance in spiritual unfoldment. When we worship Sri Hanuman, we are imbibing the qualities represented by Him such as selfless service, one-pointed devotion, etc., which will lead us to Self-realization. There are several temples of Sri Hanuman with vibrant Divine Power in all parts of India.

Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swamy Avataram

Select Legend Episode Incarnation of Sri Anjaneyaswamy as Sri Panchamukha Anjaneyaswamy Avataram Details as in "Sudharsana Samhita" Sri Panchamukha Hanumath Pavana Charithram Avatara Mahima(Divine Birth History)
Narrative - I: How and why did Sri Anjaneyaswamy incarnate as Sri Panchamukha Anjaneyaswamy?

In the Great Battle with Lord Rama, Ravana had lost all his warriors alongwith his kith and kin. Finally he had come face to face with Lord Rama himself. It was a fight of epic proportions. Lord Rama had totally disarmed Ravana. Humbled and defeated, Ravana stood helpless before Him. Lord Rama advised Ravana to go back, re-energise himself and return the next day. Even at this stage Ravana, did not realise that yet another opportunity was being given to him by Lord Rama in His Infinite Grace to reform his evil ways. Instead he approached another powerful Asura - Mayilravana, for assistance.

At Ravana's imploration, Mayilravana thought of a diabolic ritual in which Rama and Lakshmana would be offered as human sacrifice. Vibishana sensed this plan and promptly informed Lord Rama.

Vibhishana advised Lord Rama that the life support of Mayil Ravana was held by 5 Brahmaras inside a cascade(box) secreted in a cave under the seven seas. Unless these wild bees were captured and exterminated simultaneously, it would not be possible to destroy Mayil Ravana.

Sri Rama summoned Anjaneya Swamy to foil this evil plan of Mayil Ravana. Vayuputra known for his decisiveness, intuitive wisdom and speed of action realised that he would require certain specific powers from the Lord himself to be able to undertake this task. He prayed to Lord Narasimha, Sri Varaha Moorthy, Sri Garuda and Sri Hayagreeva for their blessings.

Pleased with the nobility of His mission, each of them, invested Him with powers specific to their Forms, thus enabling Sri Anjaneya to assume the Panchamukha Swaroopam. Thus incarnated in Viswaroopa form, Sri Anjaneya glittered with the Tejas and brilliance equivalent to one crore Suns( Koti Surya Sama Prabhaba). He sped across the seven seas, captured the five brahmaras and destroyed them all in one lightning crush, simultaneously ensuring the death of Mayil Ravana - for the good of all mankind.

In this Viswaroopa form, Sri Anjaneya has powers to confer extraordinary blessings on all His devotees. Hence the special attribute of Jayamangala Panchamukha Sri Anjaneya Swamy Swaroopam.

Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swamy Avataram details as obtained in 'Sudarsana Samhita'

When Lord Sriman Narayana called Sri Anjaneyaswamy at the end of Rama Avataram to go along with him to Sri Vaikuntam, Lord Anjaneya replied thus,

"Oh Lord Rama! I am very blessed to be constantly engaged in Rama Nama Japam. This Physical body (Shariram) of Sri Ramadasa (Sri Anjaneyaswamy) has been glorified by the holy embrace of Lord Rama, who is the Lord of the universe. This holy land (Bharata varsha), where Sri Ramachandramoorthy walked physically in human form is a sacred land. I am happy to be here listening to "Sri Rama Nama Japam" than accompanying you to Sri Vaikuntam".

The reason for Lord Anjaneyaswamy's decision not to go to Sri Vaikuntam was that there would be no "Rama Nama" sankeertanam or Japam in Sri Vaikuntam. Sri Hanuman valued "Sri Rama Nama Japam" much higher than anything else in this universe.

Sri Anjaneyaswamy shines as the ultimate example of selfless service and Dasya Bhava.

After Rama Avtaram was completed, there was a meeting in Devaloka. All the 33 crore Devas and the Trimurthis were present at this meeting. It was decided at this meeting that as a reward to Sri Anjaneyaswamy for his total devotion and selfless service to Lord Rama, he should be coronated as the "Brahma" of the next yuga (31st Namavali in Hanumath Ashtotharam which reads as "Bhavishya Chaturananaha").

The Devas then descended on Bhooloka (earth) and gave Sankam, Chakram, Kreetam and Kundalam, the symbols to be adorned by Brahma. Brahma's office or position was thus being conferred on Sri Anjaneyaswamy.

Lord Sriman Narayana then appeared before Sri Anjaneya and told him "you are already aware of the secrets and nuances of Brahma Vidhya. I would narrate the other details that you should know, during my next incarnation as Lord Krishna" and disappeared.

In the Mahabharata War, Lord Krishna, keeping Arjuna as the medium, expounded the Brahma Vidhya or Bhagavad Gita to Sri Anjaneya, who was present in his form in the chariot flag of Arjuna. This Anjaneya, who heard the entire Geetopadesam from Lord Krishna is seen at Sholasingapuram (Sholingur) adorned with Shanku, Chakra and four hands as Yoga Anjaneya.

To hold the office of Brahma, it is necessary to acquire the divine powers of all the gods. Then only "Jagat Srushti" can be achieved.

After Ravana Vadham, when Asuras like Sahasra Kantan, Raktha Bindhu and Rakthakshan tried to annihilate Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Vibishana, Lord Rama gave his Kodhandam to Hanuman, enabling him to annihilate the Asuras. All the Devas then gave their Astras or weapons to Sri Anjaneyaswamy. Lord Shiva gave his third eye to Maruthi. Hanuman then got 10 hands or (Dhasabhujam) and with the above weapons killed the Asuras. This swaroopa of Lord Anjaneya can be worshipped at Anantamangalam - Rajagopalaswami temple near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu as Dhasa Bhuja Thrinetra Anjaneyar, in Eka Mukha posture.

Brahma gave his Ankusham to Sri Anjaneyaswamy. Lord Krishna gave his Shanku and Chakra to Hanuman. Kothandam was given by Lord Rama. The pasa rope was given by Yama dharma raja, wings were given by Garudan and Ambal gave Padmam. Thus Sri Anjaneyaswamy acquired all the powers of the Devas and the Thirumurthys. And he further obtained,
Through Lord Narasimha - Amrita Varshini Power (To give life to creations)
Through Garuda - powers to nullify all poison ( To lead a safe life)
Power to give stability to objects through Sri Varahamoorthy and
Through Lord Hayagreeva the power of universal knowledge.
Only when a deity is in possession of these powers, he may officiate as the Brahma. With the blessings of the Thirumurthis, Sri Anjaneyaswamy was conferred with these powers. With the personification of Lord Narasimha, Anjaneya, Garuda and Varaha in four directions and Hayagreeva facing upwards (oordhva Mukham), and possession of their respective powers, Sri Anjaneyaswamy incarnated as "Sri Panchamukha Hanuman". In this Panchamukha incarnation, the devas verily proclaimed Him as the Brahma for the next yuga.

Sri Panchamukha Hanumath Pavana Charithram

An episode in Sudarsana Samhita narrates Panchamukha Anjaneya Avataram as under:-

Mayil Ravana, a powerful Asura was attracted by the Sudarsana chakra of Sriman Narayana and driven by the desire to own it, snatched it away from the Lord himself.

To retrieve the Sundarsana Chakra from Mayilravana, Lord Anjaneya engaged him in battle. Unable to face the fury of Sri Anjaneya Swamy, Mayil Ravana, a Maayan started waging war with different roopams or forms. Lord Narayana appeared before Sri Anjaneyaswamy and advised him thus - "Oh Hanuman! Listen! Mayilravana has acquired lot of mystic powers. If Mayilravana were to take the form of an Animal, Bird or snake and fight - he can be killed only by Sri Narasimhaswamy, and Sri Garuda if he were to disappear beneath the earth or the sea and fight, he can be brought out only by Sri Varahamoorthy.

To fight successfully against the Rakshasa (evil), you should possess the knowledge or Gnana through Sri Hayagreeva. I bestow upon you the powers of of my above avatars here and now. You take the form of Panchamukha Anjaneya with four faces of my avatars or incarnations mentioned above in four directions and the face of Hanuman in Purvabikukha (front side). You take the form with five faces (Panchamukha), fifteen eyes (Tripachanayanam) and 10 hands (Dhasabhujam) and engage Mayilravana in war and victory will be yours".

Immediately, Sri Anjaneyaswamy incarnated as Panchamukha Hanuman by the Blessings and grace of Lord Sriman Narayana, Seeing the above avataram, Parvati Devi gifted Padmam. Sri Rama gave the Dhanus (bow & arrow), Garuda gave the Amrita kalasa and his wings, Yama Dharma Raja gave the pasa rope to Sri Anjaneyaswamy, All the other Gods gave their powers and blessings for Lord Anjaneya's victory over Mayilravana. Sri Panchamukha Anjaneyaswamy waged a fierce war with the above weapons and killed Mayilravana and retrieved the Sundarasana Chakra and submitted the same to Lord Sriman Naraya. Thus, Sri Anjaneyaswamy takes the Panchamukha Swaroopa to eradicate all evils and to bestow all blessings and benevolence on his devotees in this Yuga.

Lord Krishna in Bhagawad Gita says that among months, He identifies Himself with the holy Dhanur Masa or Margaseersha Month.

In the holy Dhanur Masa on a New Moon day (Amavasya), in the early hours of the morning know as Arunodaya, Sri Anjaneya Swamy was born with "Moola Nakshatram" as his birth star to Vayu Bhagavan and Anjana Devi, Avanara Sthree. Because Sri Anjaneya Swamy has pivotal role in Srimad Ramayanam and Sri Anjaneya Swamy's Rama Bhakti and Rama Seva, the 33 crores Devas gave a boon to Sri Anjaneya, blessing Him to be the Brahma for the next Yuga (the namavali reads - Bhavishya Chaturananaha).

Epics bring out that Lord Anjaneya prayed to all the gods, seeking their blessings, and to be bestowed with specific powers to discharge his duties as Brahma effectively. By his penance devoted to Sri Narasimhaswamy, Sri Garuda, Sri Varaha Moorthy & Sari Hayagreeva. Sri Anjaneyaswamy obtained their blessings and powers and taking facial forms of each one of the above gods, one each per direction or dikku, Maruthi was blessed to become a Panchamukha Anjaneya in Viswaroopa posture.

HANUMAN WE ADORE
Hanuman, the glorious, speaks

dehabuddhya tu daasosmi
jivabuddhyaa twasdamshakah I
atmabuddhya twamevaham
iti me nischita matih II

(Sri Hanumanji, the greatest devotee of Lord Sri Rama, worshipped his Lord with the attitude of a servant and by the servant-Master attitude, attained such a lofty plane in the spiritual sphere that, when he was once asked by Lord Rama as to who he was, he boldly replied as follows):

"When I identify myself with the body, O Lord, I am Your humble servant. When I identify myself with the individuality, I am a part of you. But when I identify myself with the atman, I am Thyself. This is my firm conviction."

* * *

Why adore Hanuman

buddhirbalam yashodhairyam
nirbhayatvam arogatah I
ajaadyam vakpatutwam cha
hanumat smaranaat bhavet II

Constant remembrance and devout adoration of Sri Hanumanji, who is chiranjeevi (who lives eternally, and is immortal), bestows on the votaries all that they need for their welfare, success and happiness: intellectual brilliance and eloquence, glory and excellence, courage and fearlessness, good health and sprightliness, which in fact are the essential ingredients of an ideal and perfect life, as a prelude to the attainment of the summum bonum, viz. the spiritual enlightenment.

* * *

Salutations to Hanuman

manojavan maarutatulya vegam
jitendriyam buddhimatam varistham I
vaatatmajam vaanarayootha mukhyam
sriraamadootam shirasaa namaami II

To the emissary of Lord Rama, the master of his mind, as swift as the wind, who has conquered the unruly senses, supreme among the wise, the son of the wind-god and the chieftain of the simian horde, I bow my head with all humility and offer my salutations.

* * *

Hanuman my resort

asaadhya saadhaka swamin
asaadhyam tava kim vada I
sriramadootam kripasindho
matkaaryam saadhaya prabho II

Having to your credit the accomplishment of so many formidable tasks, is there anything that you cannot do? O Lord, ocean of grace, the emissary of Sri Rama, deign to help me get through the task I have undertaken

Five Gems on Hanuman
I shine forth Hanuman, Who is the Son of wind, Who is approached by everyone seeking a wish, Who brings forth joy, Who is free from desires, Who is gladdening, and Who is the foremost in the messengers of Rama. I think of Hanuman, Whose face is like a red new lotus, Whose corners of the eyes are full of mercy, Who is animating, Whose valor is charming, and Who is the pride of Anjana.||1-2||

I take support of Hanuman, Who is faster than the arrow of enemy of Shambara (Krishna), Who has wide large eyes like the petals of a big lotus flower, Whose throat is shaped like a conch-shell, Who is the fortune of Anila (Wind), Whose lips are red like the Bimba fruit, and Who is unique. May the idol of Hanuman — Who destroyed the pain of Sita, Who brought forth the resplendence and energy inside Rama, Who destroyed the glory of Ten-headed Ravana — appears before me.||3-4||

I saw Hanuman, the leader of the group of monkeys, Who is like the sun for water-lily like lineage of demons, Who is perfect for the happiness of the poor, and Who is the result of penance of Pavana (Wind).||5||

Those who read this five jewel-like eulogy of the son of Pavana (Hanuman), enjoy all the luxuries for a long time; in the end they attain the devotion of Sri Rama.||6||

SHRI RAAMACHANDRA KRIPAALU BHAJU MANA HARANA
BHAVABHAYA DAARUNAN
NAVAKANJA-LOCHANA, KANJA-MUKHA, KARA-KANJA,
PADA-KAMJAARUNAN

O mind, remember Rama, the Lord of compassion who will eradicate even the most terrible dread of life; his eyes are like newly-blown lotuses set in his lotus-face; lotus-like are his hands and like ruddy lotuses his feet.

KANDARPA AGANITA AMITA CHABI,
NAVANIILA-NIIRADA SUNDARAN
PATA PATA MAANAHU TADITA RUCHI SUCHI NAUMI JANAKA
SUTAAVARAN

With utmost humility I do obeisance to Sita’s consort, Ramachandra, whose boundless beauty excels that of myriad of cupids (taken together). He is as winsome as the rain-laden blue clouds. The yellow attire on his body, beautiful spotless and sanctified, looks as charming as the flashes of lightening.

BHAJU DIINABANDHU DINESHA DANAVA-DAITYA-VANSHA-NIKANDANA
RAGHUNANADANA AANANDAKANDA KOSHALACHANDA DASHRATHA
NANDANAN

Meditate on Rama, the delight of the house of Raghu, root of all bliss, soothing as the moon to the Koshalas, Dashrath’s son, compassionate to the destitute, the scion of the solar race and the extirpator of the demons and diabolic daityas (giants).

SIRA MUKUTA KUNDALA TILAKA CHAARU UDAARU ANGA
VIBHUUSANAN
AAJAANUBHUJA SHARA-CHAAPA-DHARA,
SANGRAAMA-JITA-KHARA-DUSHANAM

He has a (resplendent) crown on his head, a pair of pendants in hi ears, a lovely caste-mark on his forehead and ornaments on his lustrous body. The arms that reach the knees are holding the bow and arrows of the conqueror of Khara and Duushana (two of his demonic adversaries)

ITI VADATI TULASIIDAASA SHANKARA-SHESHA-MUNI-MANI-RANJANA
MAMA HRIDAYA-KANJ-NIVASA KURU,
KAAMAADI KHALA-DALA-GANJANA

Concluding (his festal song, the Arti), Tulsidas entreats Rama, the delight of Shiva, Serpent-King and anchorites and slayer of the troops of Lust and the like, to make his lotus-heart His abode.

MANU JAAHI RAACHEU MILIHI SO BARU SAHAJA SUNDARA SAANVARO
KARUNAANIDHAANU SUJAANA SIILU SANEHA JAANATA RAAVARO
YEHI BHAANTI GAURII ASIISA MUNI SIYA SAHITA HIYAN HARASHII
ALIIN
TULASII BHAVAANIHI PUUJI PUNI PUNI PUNI MUDITA MANA MANDIRA
CHALIIN

The dark-complexioned and naturally handsome prince, on whom you have set your heart, shall be your husband. The gracious and omniscient Lord knows your loving disposition and your love. Sita and all her companions were overjoyed to hear this blessing from Gauri’s lips. Worshipping Bhavaani again and again, Sita says Tulsidas, returned to the palace, rejoicing in her heart.

JAANI GAURII ANUKUULA SIYAHIYA HARASHU NA JAAII KAHI
MANJULA MANGALA MUULA BAAMA ANGA PHARKANA LAGE

Finding Gauri favourably disposed towards her, Sita was more glad of heart than words can tell. Her left side began to throb, a sure omen of good fortune.

Shri Krishna Aarti

Let us chorus this prayer and wave lights to the two adolescents, Radha and Krishna and offer our body mind and all our riches (to win their gracious favour).

RAVI SHASHI KOTI VADANA KII SHOBHAA|
TAAHI NIRAKHA MERAA MANA LOBHAA||

When I look at them, my mind is enamoured of the beauty of their faces which matches that of a myriad of suns and Moons.

GAURA SHYAAMA MUKHA NIRAKHATA RIIJHAI|
PRABHU KO RUUPA NAYANA BHARA PIJAI||

When one beholds the two faces, one fair and the other dark, one is instantly fascinated. The poet calls upon all to satiate their eyes with the beauty of the Lord’s countenance.

KANNCHANA THAARA KAPUURA KII BAATII|

BRAHMAA VISHNU SADAASHIVAA, ARDDHAANGII DHAARAA
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVAA...

Glory to you, O Shiva! Glory to you, O Omkaara! May Brahma, Vishnu and the assembly of other gods, including the great Lord Shiva, relieve me of my afflictions!

EKAANANA CHATURAANANA PANCHANANA RAAJE
HANSAANANA, GARURAASANA VRISHVAAHANA SAAJE
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

Being the Absolute, True being, Consciousness and Bliss, you play the roles of all the 3 gods- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) As Vishnu you have but one face, as Brahma four and as Shiva five. They gladden the sight of all who behold them. As Brahma you prefer the back of the swan for your seat; as Vishnu you like to ensconce yourself on the back of Garuda (A large mythological eagle-like bird believed to be the vehicle of Lord Vishnu) and as Shiva to make the sacred bull your conveyance; all these stand ready. O Great Lord, pray rid me of my afflictions!

DO BHUJA, CHAARU CHATURBHUJA DASHABHUJA ATI SOHE
TIINON RUUPA NIRAKHATE TRIBHUVANA JANA MOHE
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

As Brahma, you possess two arms, as Vishnu four and as Shiva (Dashabaahu) ten, all of which look matchlessly lovely. No sooner do the inhabitants of the three spheres behold you than they are all enchanted. O great Lord Omkaara, pray rid me of my afflictions.

AKSAMAALA VANAMAALA MUNDAMAALA DHAARII
CHANDANA MRIGAMADA SOHAI BHAALE SHASHIDHAARII
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

You are, O great Lord Omkaara, wearing a garland of Rudraaksha, another of forest flowers the third of skulls; your forehead, glistening in the moonlight which it holds, is smeared with sandal paste and musk, Pray rid...

SHVETAAMBARA PIITAAMBARA BAAGHAMBARA ANGE
BRAHMAADIKA SANAKAADIKA PRETAADIKA SANGE
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

O great Lord Omkaara, your body is attired in white and yellow silken clothes and in tiger skin, while in your company are troops of goblins, gods like Brahma and divine seers like Sanaka. Pray rid...

KARA MADHYE KAMANDALU AU TRISHUULA DHAARII
SUKHAKAARII DUKHAHAARII JAGAPAALANAKAARII
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

O great Lord Omkaara, you hold a kamandalu (the mendicants water-jar) in one of your hands and in another a trident; you bring joy to all, destroy all distress and sustain the whole world. May you rid me of all my afflictions!

BRAHMAA VISHNU SADAASHIVA JAANATA AVIVEKAA
PRANAVAAKSARA MEIN SHOBHITA YE TINONH EKAA
OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

The ignorant (unwise and stupid) know Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva as three individual gods, but they are all indistinguishably fused into a single mystic syllable ‘OM’. Pray rid me of my afflictions)

(Five gems on Hanuman)

Veethakhila vishayecham, Jathanandaasru pulakamathyacham,

Seethapathi dhoothakhyam ,Vathathmajamadhya bhavaye hrudhyam. 1

I think about the son of Vayu in my mind,

Who is devoid of all desires of enjoyment,

Who sheds copious tears of joy,

Whose hair stands erect at His thought,

And who is the great emissary of the Lord of Sita

Tharunaruna Muka kamalam , karuna rasa poora poorithapangam,

Saajeevanamaasase manjula mahimana manjana Bhagyam. 2

All my life I yearn to see that Hanuman,

Who is the good fortune of Anjana,

Whose face is as red as the rising Sun,

Whose glances are full of the mercy,

Who brought back the dead in the battle,

And whose fame is great.

Sambhara vairi saradhigamambudala vipula lochanadhaaram,

Kambu gala niladishtam bimba jwalithoshta mekamalambhe 3

My only refuge is Hanuman,

Who had reddish lips like the Bimba fruit,

Who is the enemy of the arrows of Manmatha,

Who has broad eyes like lotus leaves,

And whose neck is like a conch.

Dhoorikrutha seetharthi , prakati krutha rama vaibhava spohoorthi,

Daritha dasa mukha keerthi, puratho mama bhathu Hanumatho Murthy. 4

Let the form of Hanuman ,

Which drove away the sorrow of Sita,

Which made known the prowess of Rama,

And which destroyed the fame of ten headed Ravana,

Shine before me.

Vanara nikaradhyaksham, dhanava kula kumudha ravikara sadruksham,

Dheena janavana dheeksham pavana paka ambuja madraksham. 5

I Saw Lord Hanuman,

Who is the result of penance of God of wind,

Who is the leader of all monkeys,

Who is similar to the Sun God to water lily,

To the hoards of Rakshasas,

And who is he protector of the suffering humans.

Ethath pavana suthasya stotram,

He who reads these five gems,

Which are the poems of praise of,

Would become a devotee of Lord Rama,

And would enjoy his life for a long time.

ravinder said...

Lord Hanuman is said to have appeared before Raghavendraswamy in a unique way amalgamating within him the avataras of "varaha, garuda, anjaneya, narasimha and hayagreeva", thus five-headed. Panchamukhi, located on the south bank of river Tungabhadra near Manchala now known as Mantralayam is where Raghavendraswamy performed penance for 12 long years in a cave. In appreciation of his Yoga, Lord Panchamukhi Pranadevaru, Kollahpura Mahalakshmi, Lord Venkateshwara of Tirupati and Kurmavathara gave darshan to him. Then he left for Mantralaya where he entered into Samadhi. A temple has been constructed at the spot where he performed penance known as the Panchamukhi Anjaneyaswamy temple.

The details of Panchamukaa are:

1. East facing ANJANEYA to grant humanity ISHTA SIDDHI.
2. South facing KARALA UGRAVEERA NARASIMHA to grant humanity ABHISTA SIDDHI
3. West facing MAHAVEERA GARUDA to grant humanity SAKALA SOWBHAGYA
4. North facing LAKSMI VARAHA to grant humanity DHANA PRAPTHI, and
5. Urdhva Mukha {atop} being HAYAGRIVA to grant humanity SARVA VIDYA JAYA PRAPTHI.

The interpretations

1. There are five ways of prayer to the Lord. They are Naman, Smaran, Keerthanam, Yachanam and Arpanam. The five faces depict these five forms. Lord Hanuman always used to Naman, Smaran and Keerthanam of Lord Sri Rama. He totally surrendered (Arpanam) to his Master Sri Ram. He also begged (yachanam) Sri Rama to bless him the undivided love.

2. In Bhagavat Gita Lord Krishna says to Arjun, "He who acts for me, who is engrossed in me, who is my devotee, who is free from attachment, he reaches me" . We find all these 5 qualities enshrined in Hanuman. Each of his face explains the five divine qualifications. May be an artist thought over about this before making the Vigraham.

....Aadiyantha prabhu

Half Ganesha and half Hanuman
At Madya Kailas temple Adyar Madras

The idol is an amalgam of Sri vigneshwara and Sri Anjaneya on the lines of Ardhanareeswara ( Siva and Parvati) and Sri Sankaranarayana (combination of Siva and narayana).

The word Aadiyantha stands for 'begining to end' (Aadi - begining & Antha - end). There is a Tamil saying 'Begin with Ganesa and end up with Anjaneya'. Many people visit the temple to get blessing of the 'Twins' against the influence of Navagrahas. The importance of the idol is that Sri Vigneswara and Sri Anjaneya are the only two deities who are totally free from any influence over them whatsoever by the Navagrahas. It is believed that, the devotees can and do influence the Navagrahas themselves proportionate to the devoutness with which the devotees address themselves to Sri Aadiyanta Prabhu!
