The following is the translation of the dohas (poems) of Shri Goswami Tulsidasji. The translation has been made by Dhananjay Kadwane (hereinafter called 'translator'). The translator has taken all dohas from a publication of Shri Gorakhpur Press (authored by Shri Hanumanprasad Poddar). The hindi translation made by Shri Hanumanprasad Poddar in the aforesaid publication is taken as a base by the translator. Goswami Tulsidasji is the saint of the highest ranking and a very prominent devotee of Lord Rama. The translator is a very ordinary person with ordinary intellect. Therefore there may be mistakes in the translation. The translator requests everyone to point out his mistakes. The serial number is for giving reference to the original dohas. The serial number is not relevant while reading the doha. One doha do not have any relation or cross reference to another.

23. If you think that you can make a change in the mindset of a foolish person then why Lord Krishna could not change Duryodhana's mind?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13. Lord Rama is so compassionate and benefactor of the poor that he made useless things like gold, diamond etc very dear. But at the same time necessities like water, air and food are cheap.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

19. Lord Rama is the master of monkeys. He sits beneath the tree and the monkeys sit on the branches of the tree. Still he does not mind it and the monkeys are dear to him. Have you ever heard of any lord who is so much compassionate and forgiving?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

89. Hanumanji could not do anything between the feud of Sugreeva and Bali. Lord Rama's blessings made him powerful.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

35. Bhibhishana and Sugreeva considered themselves to be the greatest devotees of Lord Rama. When the duo met Bharata they could not see him eye to eye. Bhibhishana and Sugreeva got kingdom for having acted as devotees of Lord Rama. Bharata got nothing in return for devotion to Rama.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

85. and 86. To keep one's position and to flourish, people use the following methods - 1. They treat others as equals and get their affection. 2. They use the money power to influence others. 3. They use the power of stick (muscle power) to influence others. 4. They either divide others for their benefit or they maintain division between their appearance and purpose to fool others.
In the kingdom of Lord Rama only the sanyasis held sticks in their hands. The division between appearance and purpose was only made by the drama artists. No one paid any heed to the anger of others because everyone's heart was filled with love. Everyone was satisfied with the remuneration he got and none said he was doing any favour (obligation) to others.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

78. A very horrible snake with two tongues, black skin and zig-zag unpredictable movements will offer itself to you on speaking sweet words that soothes its ego.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

39. You may say that Kauravas represent the limit of anger and Pandavas that of forgiveness. Hundred Kauravas could not kill five Pandavas and one Bhima killed hundred Kauravas.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

42. In the court of Duryodhana the likes of Shakuni are considered as intelligent and appreciable. Persons like Mahatma Vidur, Pitamaha Bhishma, Lord Krishna and Guru Drona are considered as ordinary persons.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

43. In the court of Pandavas even after knowing that Pitamaha Bhishma and Guru Drona belong to the enemy's side, they were revered as God Shiva and God Vishnu. This is the difference of culture.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

74. When a crooked person appears simple to you dont get carried away. Even the most poisonous snake who always make zig-zag movements becomes straight while entering into the hole.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

28. Do you think mother Sita deserved to be questioned and Lord Krishna had stolen the pearl? It could never happen. But the thing is that you cannot please everyone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

51. You may pass through a heavy downpour and still manage to remain dry. But you cannot remain safe from the bad words of the wicked.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

62. There are people who will curse King Bali and King Harishchandra. But they wont give anything to the beggar coming to their door. They will further say 'What Karna and Maharishi Dadhichi has done?'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
53. He who becomes friend of the wicked loses very heavily.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
38. Our mind should understand clearly the virtue of forgiveness and the vice of anger. Maharishi Bhrugu could not control his anger and hit his leg on God Vishnu's chest. God Vishnu pardoned this act of Maharishi Bhrugu. God Vishnu is the lord of Shri Lakshmi and the whole universe. On the other hand persons applying ash on their body dont get anything after begging.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. If a person can die by consuming honey, dont use poison for killing him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. In this kaliyuga all persons discuss about the knowledge of spirit. These very same persons then kill their Guru for a single paisa. Then they say 'Who kills?' 'Who is Killed?' 'The spirit is eternal'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. You should keep your head on the feet of persons like Mother, Father and Guru and convince your point to them. Think carefully hundred times before expressing your displeasure to them. You should never win in the situation where winning actually means getting defeated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
59. If a person has the habbit of saying good or bad about others without verifying the facts and if such person meets you then you should ignore his remarks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
72. A person who does good during his life also does good at the time of his death. A person who does evil during his life also does evil at the time of his death. Jatayu and Marich can be considered as examples of this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
36. If someone tries to hurt you then you should only protect yourself. Always remember that the great protector Shri Ram is always present on everybody's head. So you should never think of hurting others in retaliation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
84. Many have died in the past, many are dying at present and many will die every moment in the future. No death can ever match the elegant death of Jatayu for trying to make Mother Sita free from the clutches of Ravana.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. A person while walking hits a stone and receives injury. He cannot do anything to the stone therefore he goes to his home and tears cushions in his home to pieces. In this Kaliyuga foolish persons like this will born in thousands and put their own people in grave trouble for their misdeeds outside their home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
16. Look at the cotton in the bed and the iron in the stone cutting tool. Both the cotton and the iron are being hurt, cotton for the benefit of others and iron for hurting others. Good persons are like cotton and wicked ones like iron.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17. If you dont give a paisa in the need of hour, there wont be any use of giving lakhs and crores later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18. When the sun is away the size of our shadow is very long. The shadow comes under our feet when the sun is at the top. Like this illusion increases if we are away from the path shown by Lord Rama and it decreases when we adhere to his path.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. If you speak sweet words then you are able to increase your good fortune without any efforts. Similarly if you speak harsh words then you invite your misfortune. A cuckoo sings kuhu-kuhu and is sought after by everyone. A crow makes kav-kav sound and people drive it away by pelting stones.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. The enemy against whom getting defeated will cause loss of our fame and emerging victorious will make us sorrowful and sinful. And if a quarrel breaks with such enemy then we should control ourselves and settle the issue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. If we speak words of benefit to someone then the animosity with the person decreases and the bonds of friendship become strong. This proves that when we speak to others we should speak for their benefit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Dont swing your tongue in the fit of anger, you may swing your sword instead. Think a lot and then speak sweet words for the benefit of others.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. If we dont utter some words our stomach does not swell. Similarly if we speak a lot a mountain of words is not formed. Therefore always speak appropriate after having regard to the time, the trend and after listening to the sacred intellect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Shri Rama-Lakshaman who always favour and benefit the poor emerge victorious even while living in the forest. But Bali and Ravana who did big talks perished in their own homes with all their supporters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. A person who has good intellect knows that good time and bad time wont last for more than two days. Therefore we should act swiftly when the time is good. Otherwise the opportunity will slip out of our hands.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. In the rainy season the cuckoo keeps quiet because it thinks that now it is a time for frogs to make ugly sounds. Similarly in the bad times the bad people are at the top and the good people keep quiet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. In the test of love stone is best, sand is in between and water is the worst. If you draw a line on stone it is forever. A line in sand is for a while. You just cannot draw a line on water. In the test of hatred their ranking is reversed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. A gold vessel containing wine and a mud vessel containing amrut. Think a while and tell what will you choose?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
20. When trees are green, animals graze. When trees bear fruits people raise their hands and eat fruits. When trees become dry people burn them as fuel. Like this everone will come to you for his own interest. If Lord Rama comes to you it is for enabling you to discover yourself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
21. Patience, dharma, power of discrimination, good literature, courage and firmness in truth (confidence in Lord Rama) these are our friends of bad times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22. The society should come together and build confidence in the air. This is a very small thing to say but a very big thing if understood. Bury a handful of grain in the earth and then see how it multiplies when it comes out of the earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24. Even if the clouds pour any quantity of amrutlike water, some trees will not bear any flowers. Like this if God Brahma himself becomes Guru of the foolish persons then also knowledge will not come to their minds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
25. He who loves his intellect is like a fish in the sea of illusion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26. If something is not clear then one should think over it again and again. If you dont understand it, it may make you sad every moment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
27. A person who digs a well when his house is swept by fire and who plants thorny trees on his compound wall when his house is attacked by his enemies, is a foolish and useless fellow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
29. A servant who is perfect in the execution of his sevak dharma becomes greater than his master. Lord Rama crosses the ocean after building a bridge. Hanumanji crosses the same ocean by taking a leap.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
30. Banyan Tree is the best tree. It broadens its base as it grows. It helps everyone in every manner through its fruits and leaves without flowering with ego.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
31. A person donates food to the fish in the water for catching the fish. By accepting such donation the fish ends its life and the donor goes to hell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
32. On that day when your own people will desert you, you cannot look at anybody for help. When the water deserts a lotus, the sun who is otherwise a friend of lotus becomes its enemy and burns it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
33. On the earth, in the sky and inside the water animals and birds live with each other in groups. We should learn from them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
34. Persons who always carry teachings of their Mother, Father and Master on their heads and abide by the same, live a successful life. Otherwise life is wasted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
37. Dont underrate acrimony and ignore it. It can have dangerous consequences. Fire breaks in a poor man's hut and the palaces of the rich are destroyed as a consequence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
40. If the drama artists go to the battlefield after hearing to the sweet and appreciating words of persons praising them, then as a result of this either they will run away from the battlefield or they will be imprisoned.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
41. People are ready to undergo the sufferings for living a life of blind. But they are not ready for the pains of applying medicine to their eyes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
44. People who are not concerned about country, time, doer, deed and speech, they remain poor even while living under the Kalpavruksha tree and sinful while living on the banks of River Ganga.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
45. Persons whose words, thoughts, actions, bodies and minds are attacked by the ants of malice, how can they become happy after fooling the God residing within them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
46. People tend to appear like a lion and do work of dogs. And after doing this, they long for fame, victory and riches.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
47. People are at the forefront while commiting major sins. But they are averse to doing minor sins. For their aversion to minor sins they demand happiness from God. As they cannot become happy they blame it on the God.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
48. Some persons appear to be very gentle while smiling, while meeting with others, while talking to others but have a malacious mind. He who stays away from such persons is an intelligent person.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
49. How can we know from a person's appearance and speech that he has a malicious mind. Shurpanakha, Putana, Ravana are examples of this fact.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
50. A person who always have animosity with others, who have liking for other's wife, other's money and who keep on cursing others such a sinful person is really a demon in human body.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
52. When a wicked person speaks sweet words to you then you should make out true meaning of his words after proper analysis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
54. God Waman cheated King Bali after proper thinking and for the benefit of Gods. After having done this he renounced his lordship and acted as doorkeeper of King Bali. But still he was having agony in his mind.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
55. Everyone likes getting to a higher level and to issue commands. But the few gentle persons who act at lower levels and execute the commands issued from the higher level merit appreciation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
56. Strong body, good qualities, sufficient wealth, greatness and faith in dharma. A person who does not have any of these but possesses ego, his life is meaningless and he cannot get anything good even after his death.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
57. The persons who want to earn fame by destroying the fame of others will get a black layer on their face. They wont be able to remove this black layer even if they die while removing it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
58. A persons good fortune runs away from his fortune if he is jealous of others happiness and wealth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
60. If the ignorant persons throw away the pearl after its examination then the pearl does not lose its value. Lord Krishna wore the garland of gunja leaves but gunja leaves did not gain in their value.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
61. Lakhs and crores of rupees are spent for construction of a temple. A crow ejects while flying over the temple. Do you think that the grandeur of the temple gets affected.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
63. Dogs and foxes may have respect or disregard for the lion in their minds. The lion who can defeat an elephant easily does not become delighted or sad due to this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
65. In the world of the God both the good and bad things are there. Intelligent persons like saints act like a swan and keep good things with them and bad things away from them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
66. As a sacred and glowing fire emits a black smoke, a bad child may born in the house of a good person.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
67. Due to its association with bad, good things also become bad. The names like Hari, Shankar and other Gods are very benefecial to pronounce. But people dont like pronouncing these names if bad persons have such names.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
69. Who does not like his own behaviour? He who always eats garlic is not affected by its odour.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
70. We have only heard about the amrut but we see poison here and there. The creator of this nature has done a dangerous task. Crows and owls are everywhere but the swan is only in the Manas Sarovar.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
71. There are many who hurt and only someone who gives benefit. The sun, fire, earth and wind all of them are adverse for the water, only cloud is for benefit of water.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
73. A bad person remains mean even after living in the company of good persons. A snake living on the trees of sandalwood remains poisonous.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
76. As long as we have interest in something that thing appears sacred and benefecial. If that thing is of no use then it appears without any virtue and like an enemy. A tooth in mouth is like a pearl. If it breaks and falls on ground it is a piece of bone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
77. Animosity and love makes a person blind. We cannot see any virtue in the person against whom we have animosity. Similarly we cannot see any vice in the person whom we love. What is the value of the water of river ganga to the person who drinks wine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
79. He who breaches others, turns his back to Shri Rama and takes pleasure in sensual happiness, can such a person acquire wealth, peace of mind and other good signs even in his dream.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
80. What is that which a fire cannot burn? What is that which cannot submerse in the sea? What is that which a woman who is considered as weak cannot do after her empowerment? And what is that which cannot be affected by the passing of time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
81. There are three strong enemies of a person. They are anger, desire and greed. A very pious and analytical person instantaneously loses his balance due to them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
83. Goddess Expectation is a very wonderful goddess. On serving her the person becomes sad. The person becomes happy if he turns his back to her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
87. Lord Rama was wearing clothes of leaves, was consuming fruits in jungle, was sleeping on the bed of grass. And in that situation he gave Lanka to Bhibheeshana. This is the way in which Lord Rama works.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
88. He who works on the basis of false external appearance and false speech, his work is damaged when the truth is revealed. But a person who works with pure mind is always protected by Lord Rama.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
90. Lord Rama says that people who like God Shiva but are against him, similarly people who long to become his devotees and are against God Shiva, will go to hell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
91. If Lord Rama becomes adverse then obtaining fuel in the dense forest wont be possible, obtaining water in sea wont be possible and it wont be possible for Kubera to get food to eat.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
92. Offending Shri Krishna results in calling of troubles. Duryodhana who was enjoying his kingdom offended Shri Krishna. As a result thereof he perished along with his army and family.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
93. Lord Rama's name is a unit. Our means is a zero. If there is unit before zero then it is ten otherwise it is zero.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
94. Delicious amrutlike food to eat and that too unlimited. The whole kingdom is at the command and the head is not losing its balance. Our selfish needs are met and we are also able to discover our true self. This is very difficult to happen. But with Lord Rama's blessings it is possible.
